This short lecture provides an introduction to health system financing in lower-income country settings; exploring trends in financing, sources of health finance, types of financing systems operated around the world, and universal health coverage. 

Originally delivered as part of an ‘introduction to health economics’ workshop for Overseas Development Institute (ODI) Health Fellows, delivered at the Centre for Health Economics at the University of York (UK) on 31 July 2019. 

Peter C Smith is Professor of Global Health Economics at the Centre for Health Economics, and Emeritus Professor of Health Policy at Imperial College Business School.
